Kindle is truly amazing September 9, 2010 Mighty Gack 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my very first Kindle or e-book reader. I'm the type that waits until a product has gone through several generations to get things worked out. I am SO happy with my Kindle Wi-Fi Graphite and Kindle Lighted Cover. You cannot believe how beautiful the screen is until you get one in your hands. By all means try one of these if you're on the fence - you have 30 days to return it, and you won't be disappointed. I am an avid reader with several hundred traditional paper books that I love and will continue to keep and read, but this, this is consciousness-altering. Bring your entire library with you wherever you go, an amazing concept. Amazon, terrific job on this product and the many small details such as the packaging (unboxing is fun!) and the ordering and status-checking and discussion forums experience.
Thanks,
Satisfied Customer
Works great...as long as you are not an international customer September 9, 2010 Scott Blake 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this device given the price drop and improved size/weight and screen resolution. It seems to work well enough....assuming you can find what you want and actually get it sent to you. Therein lies the rub.
I am giving the product only two stars because as an international customer, you simply cannot get access to books as readily as you could/should due to being in a different region - namely being anywhere but the US.
Do you want certain newspapers - sorry, not deliverable in your region is likely to be the case
Happen to like a given book - sorry, not in your region or not even available at all (because not all books are in ebook released fashion)
Do you like those free books? Well click on them and notice that they pop up in price when you get to their link because you guessed it; time to squeeze the international buyers.
I don't think I have the most obscure taste by any means but of my first few searches I am running into exactly this problem; either not an ebook at all or not available in my region even if it is an ebook. This whole need to try and get yourself a US 'shipping' address to send (uh email) a 'book' (digital ones and zeros) is ridiculous and will seriously cut how many 'books' I can buy even if I wanted to.
The only way around it I can see - somehow get your hands on a US credit card which is not going to be easy for 99.99% of the users. As such, the utility of having the device (which on its own merits is probably 3 or 4 stars) takes a huge hit for international users and it gets two stars and that is almost feeling generous at the moment. The devices are up to snuff in terms of technical ability, alas the book market is waaaay behind the times in terms of making this a truly useful product to those outside the US. Buyer beware outside the US - make sure you can find a lot of what you like (and get it sent to you!) BEFORE you buy one.
The Kindle as a tool for grad students and researchers September 9, 2010 Meriah L. Crawford (Richmond, VA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm going to limit my focus to using the Kindle in grad school or research, for what are probably obvious reasons. The ability to get books instantly, including many books free (I'm studying English), was part of what influenced me to finally get a Kindle. (Also, I *really* wanted one. :-) The ability to search is hugely, hugely important for my research, though. I used it to help me prove a point in a paper many times, when it would otherwise have taken hours of research to find what I was looking for. Now that they've added searching to the desktop app, it's even more useful for research. (The lack of that feature at one time was a significant flaw.) I find it quite useful for reading in general, and have also read some books on my Droid X, which was surprisingly good for the purpose.
I do have two major issues with the Kindle for grad school or research purposes. One is the lack of page numbers, which makes citing problematic. I have not yet found an ideal solution, though a combination of Google Books and the search feature for books on Amazon usually gets me a page number for the text I'm citing. (MLA, APA, etc., will need to solve this--maybe in concert with Amazon.)
The other issue is more logistical. Few book formatters use the ability to create chapters, so it's impossible to know how many pages are left in a section or chapter. While reading something dreadful, this makes it frustrating/distracting, where in a book, you can see visually how much suffering is left. Likewise, you can't simply leaf through looking for something, though that's just something to get used to.
Bottom line: I'm very glad I have it, and it's been a great tool. People working in other fields may (probably will) have issues with literature availability, but the ability to search alone makes it an invaluable tool.
Truth in advertising September 9, 2010 4America 2 out of 18 found this review helpful
I do not own the device and I'm sure it's very good but am I the only one that is going to question the advertising saying "Kindle is our #1 bestselling item for two years running. It's also the most-wished-for, most-gifted, and has the most 5-star reviews of any product on Amazon."? Compared to what? The iTouch has more 5 star reviews from what I can tell. Amazon doesn't even post it's usual product rank like it does for other products.
Don't get me wrong, I love Amazon and purchase almost everything I own from them but this just doesn't seem right to me. I expect them to hold themselves to the highest standards. Then again I could be wrong but I'd hate to see a bias here just because it is their own product.
kindle September 9, 2010 jim e 3 out of 14 found this review helpful
If you normaly buy paper backs and are thinking about buying a kindle you need to know that the price of kindle edition books is based on the hard cover price. Even when a paperback edition is on the market,if the book is popular you will normaly pay far more than the price of a paperback. I feel that this is plain and simple price gouging. There is no production cost to an e-book. An e-book should cost no more than the least expensive edition available on the market at that time.
I will only use my kindle for newspaper reading and those rare times that I would buy a hard cover edition.
