I love it. I recommend it. September 4, 2010 E. Hagan (NE Ohio) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I owned the original Kindle. This is where I really learned not to be an early adopter. Although I liked the reading/ordering experience of the Kindle right away, along with almost everyone else, I loathed the page turning button placement and design. It was so bad it completely negated the value of the unit for me. I hardly used it. Finally it died.
I did extensive comparison shopping before I bought the 3G version. The drop in price also helped. As with the first one, the selling point was the e-ink technology. I simply cannot read back-lit screens for long with any comfort. Reading e-ink screens is like reading a paper page. Also, of course, after the initial cost, there is nothing to buy but reading material - no monthly access fees. All tops on my decision-making list.
So Kindle 3G arrived last week.
PROS:
1) With this unit, they learned from their mistake and changed the page buttons. Almost eliminates hitting them by accident.
2) They also redesigned the standard protector cover for it extremely well. This has tiny hooks that go into slots on the left edge so the kindle stays in place securely.
3) Unit is lighter weight than most paperbacks, and about as large as a closed book. I can carry it easily in my handbag and read almost anywhere, even standing in line.
4) Larger font option is terrific, especially for aging eyes.
5) I love the voice guide altho have not used very much as yet
I like that the last item I'm reading goes to top of list and it goes automatically to page I left off.
6) I love the search option
I am now using my Kindle regularly and am very pleased. I'm still getting used to navigating and other features besides reading. (No, I have not read all the instructions - Duh!) I assume other reviewers may have covered this and will try to find them for guidance.
But. (you knew there would be buts). These are *considerations* only. I don't consider them to be deal busters in any way. They do deserve mention though.
BIGGEST PEEVE: power port and audio jack are at the bottom of the unit, causing the plugs to stick way out. This is extremely poor design. I can't be the only person who reads with my knees up and the bottom edge of the book against me. Can't do that with this Kindle when using power or earphones. Yes, I can unplug and read, but when I'm home, in bed, i don't like using up the battery and then having to plug it in before I can go to sleep. I haven't purchased the earphones, and having that plug sticking out has to be a bummer for listeners.
Why oh why don't electrical engineers get over the need for plugs that stick out, get in the way of use, and are more prone to damage??? They should have put all the plug ins at the top and designed a horizontal, if not recessed plug.
Peeve 2: can't see battery status while reading a book
Peeve 3; standard holder cover does not stay open. So I either have to remove it from the holder, or read two-handed. The holder adds enough weight to make it even heavier than a paperback. I can hold with one hand, but lose that light, one-page size advantage.
Peeve 4: wish there was one button for getting back to the beginning of books. It takes 7 clicks to do this!
Side peeve: would like title of book (and even author name) at top of pages
Peeve 5: They still haven't figured out how to put normal paging on each screen page? What's up with that? Those useless-to-me position numbers should be internal and toggle to display regular page numbers. Can't the machine count? I shouldn't have to bookmark or add a note that I'll have to hunt up when all I want is to memorize a page number.
Tiny Peeve 6: While plugged into power, I'd like to be able to set the auto shut-off timer higher.
I'm not thrilled with the tiny alpha keys either, but then this isn't a computer and reality means either size benefits or large keyboards, not both.
Those are my observations after a couple weeks of use. I look forward to lots of use and more game development for it too!
Perfect as a e-Reader September 4, 2010 Devon Manelski 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Kindle is the perfect device for reading. The Kindle ranks high on ease of use but, more importantly, the display with its crisp fonts and sharp contrast is really easy on the eyes. While the iPad is good enough for reading for a short period of time, the Kindle is better suited to reading on a regular basis. The free 3G is also very handy when you are on the road, and want to pick up the latest issue of your favorite magazine or newspaper.
Better than the previous version September 4, 2010 Ilia Toshev (Bulgaria) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Better than the previous version in some things. Miss the white color though. Get the lighted cover as well
I love it September 4, 2010 Donna 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Kindle 3 is the first ereader I've ever owned. I've only had it for a few days, but have found it easy to use and I'm thrilled to know I will no longer be cluttering up shelves with books. I like being able to preview a book before I purchase it. I also purchased the kindle case with the pull out light. This enables me to read in poor lighting. I'm like a little child with a new toy. I would recommend the Kindle 3 to all my avid reader friends.
Great improvements. And lower price? Double thumbs up September 4, 2010 norse.view (norway) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
After reading and spending some time adjusting settings and syncing with the 'old' white Kindle (intl. Ed) I really appreciate the improvements made to this version;
It is lighter, so easier to hold in one hand for a long, long time
Wifi instantly connects, and works better than spotty 3g coverage
Pageturns are indeed quicker, noticeably so
All collections and such transferred with ease from the old model (as well as synced pages from both the iPad and iPhone apps running alongside every now and then)
If you have wifi at home anyway and like to have a bit of a mixed backlog ready for reading, (or a few free zones around) then this version is for you - more money for the actual content
